Homecoming queen(s)

Found out something I never knew about my mother last night... She was a homecoming queen at Citronelle High school in 1972. I said "a" homecoming queen because there were two: one white and one black. I wasn't completely surprised by this but it did strike me that this wasn't really that long ago. As we thumbed through the yearbook, she pointed out that she was also a member of the "bi-racial" club, which would probably be called the "diversity" club or something more PC in these current times. She also talked about being fair-skinned and how some of the students (black and white) would accuse her of "trying to pass".
The context of this trip down memory lane came after she and I left a political gathering where my friend is running for the state board of education. She's a Republican, so the majority of the people there were Republican as well and there was a lot of lobbying from some of the guests about us "being on the wrong side". That lead to me and my mother to have our own conversation about politics and race. I don't claim to be in any political party, but it was funny that the two black males who were present automatically assumed that we were on the "democratic ship" and that it was sinking. It was an eye opener to say the least but it was all good...

At the end of the evening though, I found out what I knew all along...... my mama is a queen!!
